One thing the professionals understand is the power of getting it wrong. What I mean by that is when you are performing mind reading and mentalism tricks, one of the most powerful things you can do is to sometimes be wrong or make a mistake. You can be wrong in many different ways but for arguments sake, we will use the example of getting a prediction wrong. All the best mentalists use this at some stage and there are various benefits of getting it wrong.
The average magician never makes a mistake, he uses all different kinds of sleight of hand and other conjuring tricks to create the illusion of real magic. The mind reader on the other hand is supposedly using real skills whether telepathic or psychological and if these abilities were real, the mentalist would of course make some mistakes. If you get a prediction wrong the audience will consciously or subconsciously feel like you are genuinely using some special abilities and when you get it right, it will hit even harder.
The 3 main benefits of getting it wrong are as follows:

I learned this by accident – I was doing a private show for a client’s birthday party when one of my mind reading props failed on me, I was supposed to be able to tell which envelope contained a piece of paper which a volunteer had written on but I was unable to do so. I just had a complete guess and got it wrong. I had been performing tricks all night that were technically mind boggling but when I got it wrong one of the older guests at the party stood up and said “good god! I thought you were using some sort of conjuring tricks but now I can see you’re the real deal!”
