“This little secret is a powerful way to force a prediction and a nice show of mentalism.” – Blair K.
—————————————————–
Don’t say it! Oh no you uttered the fatal words! “Pick a card – any card.” Man, stop with the card tricks already! As soon as you pull out that deck people are on to you.
Listen. Here is a simple yet astounding little gem of magic that has been around a long time but will still get great reactions from the public (i.e. your spectator). The best part – no card deck required!
Here’s how it goes. You are going to make an impossible prediction. Really. You rip off a piece of your paper place mat when you are sitting at Buba’s 24 hr. dinner across from your friend (or better yet, your date) and tell them you are going to make a predication based on a sudden feeling you just had (perhaps Buba’s burger didn’t go down right). If you want to dress it up a bit, tell your friend you often get things backwards or reversed – mild dyslexia (this will make more sense in a moment). Write down that prediction and tell your friend to hold on to it, but not to open it – just yet. What you will write on that piece of soggy place mat and fold up to give to your friend is the number “1089″.
Now, ask your friend to write any (thats right, no forcing, total free choice) three digit number that contain no duplicate numbers (1-1-1 or 1-3-3, you get the idea, 1-2-3 would be fine). Remind him (or her if you are lucky) that this is totally up to them. Ask them if they are certain that is the number they want. Just to be safe, tell them to think of a different number if you like, just to make sure everything is on the ‘up and up’.
Now ask your friend to reverse the number (going with 1-2-3, it would be 3-2-1) and subtract the smaller from the larger (say 321-123 = 198). Now ask your friend to reverse that number (198 would now be 891). Now ask your friend to add that last sum (say, 891) to the first answer (198). You will always, always come up with “1089″.
Now dramatically ask your friend to read your prediction. Amazing! How ever did you make that impossible prediction?
This little secret is a powerful way to force a prediction and a nice show of mentalism. Try it sometime. It will work with any three digit number that doe not contain duplicate numbers!

There is ONE technique all mind readers and mentalists MUST know…
This is called Card Forcing
What IS Card Forcing?
Card forcing is where you get a volunteer to ‘randomly’ select a playing card but you really ‘force’ that card on them. This means that it looks like they’ve selected a random card that you, the mind reader, have no idea what it is, when in fact, you do. (You actually choose which card you want to force beforehand). There are literally thousands of ways you can force a card, some easier than others, but in reality they are all as powerful.
Why card forcing?
The reason it is the number 1 trick you should master is because mind reading & mentalism is ALL about the performance. The only difference between a mind reading trick and a magic trick is the way it is dressed up. Often the same methods and principles apply in magic, mind reading and mentalism.
The card force is also one of the easiest, yet one of the most powerful tricks you can perform at a moments notice with any regular pack of playing cards. It also lets you perform an endless display of mind reading, psychic predictions, influence techniques. All depending on how you want to ‘dress it up’.
For example, if you wanted to take on the persona of a ‘psychological type expert’ like Derren Brown who makes it look like he’s influencing your decision with either body language or through conversational hypnosis etc.. You can use a card force to do this.
An example of a type of card force…
The Criss-Cross Performance
The mind reader produces a piece of paper and while covering the paper, he writes down something in permanent marker pen on the paper and places it face down on the table in full view of the audience. The mind reader then pulls out a normal pack of playing cards and places the pack face down in a pile on the table also. The mind reader asks a volunteer to ‘cut’ the pack and asks them to place the cut half next to the remaining pile, he then asks the volunteer to criss-cross the remaining pile The Criss-Cross Revealed…
This is one of the more simpler card forces, although it is simple, it is surprisingly very deceptive and a good place for the beginner to start as it is completely self working and you can concentrate on the performance where your confidence will act mostly towards the misdirection. I don’t actually use this force any more as I have other favourites which I reveal in my Secret Ultimate Mind Reading Manual along with step-by-step full colour photos. Nonetheless, Here is how it is done..
You need to know the bottom card of the pile of cards when it is face down on the table. This is the card you will be forcing! This is so when they cut the cards, and place the remaining pile on top of the cut in a criss-cross, the bottom card is brought to rest on top of the criss-cross cut so when they pick up the top half and look at the bottom card of that pile, this will be the card you already know. Don’t be fooled by the simplicity of this, I have performed this hundreds of times and have never been caught. It is all about keeping the attention of the audience on YOU and not the cards. This is the misdirection that is needed to pull this off.
To understand what I mean, you will need a pack of cards in front of you so you can follow the bottom card and see for yourself.
To know the bottom card – for beginners I recommend you have the bottom card in position before you bring out the pack, otherwise, while handling the cards before you place them on the table, get a sneaky peek at it. When you take a peek, make sure you are talking and do it casually. I usually shuffle the pack and take a peek while I’ve finished shuffling and while I’m squaring up the cards.
Have fun with this one as it’s self working and you can really work on the performance.

“It will only take you an hour or two to master this easy mentalism trick and you will impress anyone who sees the trick.” – Ryan Even

Do you love entertaining your peers, and would like to do so by learning basic magic tricks? Coin Magic Tricks are one of the easiest tricks to learn, thus they are easy magic tricks for kids and novice magicians. All you need is a quick hand and a lot of practice and you can fool your friends in a wink of an eye!
Before attempting coin magic tricks, one must know the basics or you might end up making a total fool of yourself. Here are the magic basics beginners should know before attempting magic in public.
The Sleight of Hand
The Sleight of Hand is a set of techniques and key moves used by magicians in their magic tricks to fool the audience. Here are some of the basic principles:
o Palming – hiding a coin in your palm so it looks empty
o Switching – exchanging the coin from one hand to another
o Ditching – secretly disposing of the coin, such as up your sleeve, when the audience is not looking
o Stealing – secretly acquiring a coin, such as taking a coin hidden on your sleeve and bringing it to your hand when the audience is not looking
o Simulation – Fooling the audience that something just happened, when nothing actually did
o Loading – sneakily moving the coin elsewhere you need it
o Diversion – redirecting audience’s attention, so you can sneakily set up your magic trick.
Try practicing these Sleight of Hand methods again and again until you master it, before proceeding to other more complicated magic tricks such as card tricks or levitation tricks.
It takes some practice and effort to be able to perform coin magic tricks well, but that time spent will definitely be rewarded in your audience’s reaction to your trick. It’s good to learn a few coin tricks to perform in quick succession, that way you won’t risk having people make you perform the same trick again and again, and find out how you’re doing it.
