“A great advantage of mentalism magic tricks is that they can be learned quite easily with a little practice and performed almost anywhere
” – Austin Hackney

There’s no doubt that of all the kinds of magic tricks that can be performed, the most popular and effective today is to astonish an audience with amazing mentalism magic. This kind of magic creates the illusion that the magician has startling mental powers, or psychic abilities to move objects without touching them or make predictions about the future or read other people’s minds.
Of course such things cannot really be done – they are illusions. Nevertheless, this kind of amazing mentalism magic really is the most powerful of all the performance magic techniques as it really is inexplicable from the audience’s point of view.
A great advantage of mentalism magic tricks is that they can be learned quite easily with a little practice and performed almost anywhere as they frequently don’t require complex props or devices. Any props or devices you might need would be nothing more than a thumb-tip, playing cards, maybe a bit of invisible thread and some magician’s wax – all things that you can carry in your clothes. That said, there are many, many effects which can be done without any props at all. That;s one of the attractions of mentalism, coupled with the fact that it is a real crowd pleaser!
Amazing people with mental magic is no new thing. The tricks and techniques employed probably go back to ancient times when priests and prophets and oracles conned their followers into believing that they could see the future or receive messages from spirits and the dead – much as so-called psychics and mystics do today to their very great discredit.
However, the modern profession of performing apparently supernatural feats for the sake of entertainment is an entirely honourable one just so long as you are not tempted to abuse your magical powers as these charlatans and rascals who call themselves mediums and psychics do.
One of the factors that makes the magic of mentalism so uniquely intriguing to any audience is the way in which it can be performed very close up to people and still leaves them entirely at a loss as to any explanation for the effect.
If you watch carefully the great mentalist performers of our own day (such as Derren Brown) you will see that once you have the basic principles of mental magic under your belt, then the perfection of this techniques comes down to style and presentation.
Any modern magician who wants to truly astound a highly sophisticated modern audience, or even just cause real astonishment at parties, would do well to learn some amazing mentalism magic!

“You have to go in knowing that you are going to pull off one of the biggest magic tricks ever. You can’t be going in nervous or weak, it will show and take away from the trick as the spectator will suspect something right from the beginning.” – Dion Semeniuk
“Do not worry about learning 100 tricks, just learn 5 or 6 REALLY well and make it special.” – Adam Davies

I recently re-read a modern day classic on mind reading and mentalism. The book is by Paul Brook and is called The Alchemical tools. The book is essentially a must have for any mind reader or mentalist – novice and professional. Google ‘Paul Brook Mind Reading’ for more information.
Anyway, after reading the book again I re-read the true story about how one day he had a disagreement with one of his pupils. Being a great mind reader Paul occasionally took on people to teach his secrets to. Paul gives the impression this particular pupil was a bit of an idiot and an argument ensued.
In the argument the pupil basically claimed he was now better than Paul and knew everything he needed to know and left Paul to go out on his own. He soon returned with his tail between his legs claiming he could only get a handful of bookings and needed Paul’s help. Paul took pity on the poor fellow and said he would watch him at his next gig to see if there were any problems in his performance and why people didn’t seem to recommend him.
After his gig Paul said he knew the problem, he said he was throwing too many tricks at the crowd in quick succession and not giving each trick a chance to build in the mind of the audience. The pupil wasn’t convinced so Paul asked him to one of his own gigs in a couple of days time.
Paul’s gig was table hopping at a private function and it was split into 3 sections – before seating entertainment, after desert entertainment and a final section after the other acts had performed. Anyway, Paul said that he would perform in the first section and the pupil in the second. Then, they would ask the guests to vote on who they wanted to see on the final section. The pupil looked smug and agreed to the challenge.
They each performed their bits and a vote was taken. Every single guest voted for Paul. The pupil was stunned..
The pupil asked the individual guests why they didn’t choose him. They all replied along the lines of, “It’s because Paul really got into our minds and gave us all goosebumps.”
How did he do it? Well, the pupil was busy throwing 100 tricks at the guests in quick succession barely giving them time to appreciate it. Paul only performed ONE trick on each table. That trick got everyone involved and lasted 15 minutes, building up the suspense each time.
The moral of the story – I’ll say it again, take your time and don’t worry about learning 100 tricks, just learn 5 or 6 REALLY well and make it special. That’s the difference between good mind reading and great mind reading.

“Persuasion is key to having a great performance.” – Bradlee Carter
“Modern and contemporary performers mostly state openly that their abilities come from being able to accurately read body language, among other techniques used by mentalists.” – Rachel Rodriguez

Mentalists have been performing an art called mentalism for many years. Mentalism is considered a form of a performing art that involves the performer to use their mental acuity and the principles that are basic to stage magic to give the illusion of psychic abilities including psychokinesis, precognition, and mind control. Most mentalists also use hypnosis in their mentalism routines. Modern mentalism can be traced back to test given to people who claimed to have supernatural powers in the 19th Century.
The use of hypnosis in mentalism effects are varied. Some mentalists use hypnosis as a cover for their effects while others use them as a part of the effect.
Mentalism effects include many different forms of magic. Mind reading and mind control are perhaps the most common. However, utilization of effects to give the appearance of psycho-kinetic is also very common. During a mentalists routine, they will use two very standard tests based on the tests used in the 19th century. The most common is called the book test. During the book test, a spectator will be asked to choose a page at random. They will then be asked to choose a word, or words, at random and concentrate on the page number and the word, or words, chosen. The book will then be closed and the mentalist will attempt to read the mind of the spectator and find the chosen page as well as the chosen text. This test has been modified to become a more compact effect that can be performed anywhere. It is now performed using a deck of playing cards.
Another popular version of mentalism is psycho-kinetic. There are many popular ways to handle this. One of them is to make objects, as well as the mentalist, and even other people, to levitate. During psycho-kinetic effects, the mentalist will “make” objects move with his or her mind. Mentalists also use chalk slates for predictions and give the appearance of mind control. During mind control effects, hypnosis is commonly used. The most common form of hypnosis used during such effects is called covert hypnosis, or conversational hypnosis.
To use conversational hypnosis, they have to be able to achieve several simple tasks. First, the mentalist needs to get the attention of the person being hypnotized, and maintain it. Once the mentalist has the spectators full attention, they will then need to develop a rapport with the subject. Once the rapport is built, the mentalist can then induce a trance like state by using specific language. Once the subject is hypnotized, the mentalist can then present the subject with the suggestions. This can be done in a conversational manner that leaves the subject completely unaware that they are being subjected to a form of hypnosis.
Many magicians now use mentalist techniques coupled with hypnosis techniques. In the past, mentalists used their abilities for their own profit, more then actual entertainment. They claimed that they actually had supernatural abilities. Modern and contemporary performers mostly state openly that their abilities come from being able to accurately read body language, among other techniques used by mentalists. The abilities are shown by these performers as nothing more then a performance. However, some contemporary mentalists still maintain that they have these powers, yet fail the tests that are presented before them. Mentalists such as Geller still maintain that they have psychic abilities and psycho-kinetic abilities, however, can not prove it unless under their controlled circumstances.
