Mentalism – Mentalism is a performing art in which its practitioners, known as mentalists, use mental acuity, cold reading, hot reading, principles of stage magic, and/or suggestion to present the illusion of mind reading, psychokinesis, extra-sensory perception, precognition, clairvoyance or mind control. Hypnosis may also be used as a stage tool.

This definition is spot on – take note of the words ‘present the illusion of Mind Reading’. I haven’t given the definition of mind reading for a very good reason, as the ‘real’ definition pertains to a superhuman ability and in my opinion an ability that based on evidence, doesn’t exist. This on the other hand is another debate for a whole other day.

Mind Reading as you know it, performed on TV by magicians/mentalists/mind readers etc. is merely a form of Mentalism (see above) – simple magic tricks dressed up to represent certain abilities e.g. Impossible Body Reading, psychic ability etc.. This may seem fairly obvious to most of you but believe me – many, many people believe people can actually read minds, which for us mentalists/mind readers, is great news.

I have previously written an article on the persona of the mentalist so I won’t go into detail here but being congruent is very important when performing mentalism tricks and some mentalists do it better than others. You need to choose between being psychic or being a body language/human behavioural expert. You cannot be both to your audience as they will assume there is general trickery (which of course there is) going on.

There’s a thin line between the mentalist and the magician. The main one being the presentation of the effect. A mentalist will usually have a false explanation behind the effect where as a magician will not usually give an explanation and say it was merely magic. Without a false explanation the audience will come to their own conclusion and usually it will be the actual method used e.g. sleight of hand.

In my opinion this is what makes a mentalism effect much stronger than a standard magic effect. It’s all in the presentation.

So back to my original point and to summarise.. mind reading tricks are merely mentalism tricks that have a false explanation of using mind control or telepathy using psychological tricks or psychic ability. Mind reading tricks come under the umbrella of mentalism tricks as a whole and they are virtually one in the same thing.

There are a lot of resources available online teaching the art of mentalism and magic with all the details. Is it possible to learn mentalism by reading ebook and watching videos? Yes, it is quite possible to learn the essense of the trick.

Learning a few tricks do not make you magician or mentalist. Every mentalism and magic trick must be practiced several times by the beginner magician. Otherwise the results can be very disappointing.

The person who wants to learn mentalism tricks, should prefer the easy tricks he can perform in front of his family and friends. It is vital to practice the newly learned tricks until you completely learn how to apply it.

If a trick is presented without enough rehearsal, the audience will not be late to realize the secret of the trick and will scream you all the steps how you did that. This situation is enough reason to give up doing magic. The people who experience such embarrassments never want to do magic again.

A person who are serious about becoming a mentalist, needs to focus and practice the tricks 3-4 days a week or 2-3 hours a day. Some very easy tricks do not require this much work. But developing a continuous discipline of practicing and rehearsal until it is completely learned, is very important for becoming a successful in learning mentalism tricks and magic.

I have always wondered how the illusionists were able to “read”, or better guess, what’s on my mind and they actually could!

1. Odds

Knowing the odds is one of the techniques behind mind-control tricks. When a magician gives the classic line “pick a card, any card,” an audience member will tend to pick the Ace of Spades, Queen of Hearts, Nine of Diamonds or Six of Clubs. A magician begins the illusion with these four cards in different pockets. Next the magician asks the audience member to concentrate on the card he has chosen. The magician then “reads the mind” of the person and whips out the correct card from his pocket when the audience member answers. The odds aren’t restricted to card tricks. Several mind-reading tricks turn on the fact that most people will choose carrot when asked to pick a vegetable (at least in the United States; other vegetables may be more popular in some countries).

2. Prestidigitation

Prestidigitation means quick fingers. It’s also known as sleight of hand, and it is used in many kinds of magic tricks, including mind-reading. Sleight of hand involves secretly moving an object, holding an object in a hand that seems to be empty, getting rid of or picking up an object without being seen, giving the impression that an action has been done when it hasn’t, directing an audience’s attention away from a secret move, and covertly moving an object or trading two objects. A skillfully—and trickily—shuffled deck of cards can be the technique behind a mind-reading feat where a magician uses his mind to determine a card a person holds in a hand of poker.

3. Showmanship

A good mind-reading trick is also a performance, one that makes the audience believe what they are seeing is no trick. For example, a magician might want to work on facial expressions that show the effort mind-reading takes. Body language is also important. The way a magician holds his body can suggest weakness after a mind reading feat, or the tension the magician feels when concentrating deeply enough to read someone’s mind. Showmanship, like any kind of acting, needs to be rehearsed, and it is as important to practice as the mechanics of a trick.

4. Patter

Patter is the words a magician uses while performing. Talking is a great way to distract the audience from the mechanics of a mind-reading trick. Patter can also make a trick more exciting and dramatic. For example, the magician could tell a story about his mind-reading powers. The story could involve the moment the mind-reader first discovered he had the gift. Or it could involve the way the mind-reader’s ability works, such as a magician explaining that when she touches an object she flashes on the thoughts of the person holding it. In any case, the story enhances the mystery and drama of the mind-reading trick.
