Right off the bat, it is a fact that one can never read minds like we see in the movies or read in books – where a character such as Twilight’s Edward can actually hear your thoughts. However, do not fret because when you read about these secrets for mind reading tricks, you could be as good as them without having any supernatural powers.

Mind reading is actually a very critical human skill. It is how we make sense of another person’s behavior and reach decisions as to what we will do. Here are some tips on how to understand what another person is thinking of through their actions:

Observe the eyes. When a person is interested in something they just thought of or saw, their pupils usually enlarge – and shrinks if he/she is generally not interested. Another interesting tip is looking at the direction of the eyes. This is usually true for right-handed people. For left-handed people, simply reverse the directions. If their eyes go up and to the right, they are usually remembering a visual image. If their eyes go up and to the left, they are usually constructing a visual image. If their eyes go down to the right, they are usually engaged in internal dialog. If their eyes go down to the left, they are usually trying to remember kinesthetic feelings.

Observe the mouth. A slightly open mouth is a sign of general interest and curiosity.

Observe the posture. If a person is leaned towards you, this is usually a sign that he or she wants to know more about you or what you are talking about.

There’s a question on the minds of mind readers and mentalists worldwide. Should you use playing cards in your effects? The debate has raged for many years and it splits into 2 groups. One says you should, one says you shouldn’t.

The group that say you should not, claim that it gives the impression that you are just a magician doing normal magic card tricks. This is a fair point as if someone comes up to you and a group of friends with a deck of cards in hand and says, “Hey, you guys wanna see some card tricks?” you can usually hear a groan among the crowd. Yes, some people enjoy normal card tricks but that isn’t the point in this case. They think that people will label you as a magician if you use cards and not take you seriously enough.

The group that says you should say that it depends on the presentation and the actual trick you perform. They say that as long as you explain the use of playing cards in your mind reading effects then it’s OK. They say that bringing cards into the occasion doesn’t have to be a negative thing and if performed well, you can still hit hard with your mentalism tricks.

The two groups that disagree both contain famous mind readers and mentalists whose views you should at least respect. I know of many mentalists who started by using playing cards but over the years decided against them and I know mentalists who did the opposite and started using them at a later date.

My personal view is that it’s OK as long as you do explain the need of them. I usually say that it’s a method to connect with people because everyone has seen playing cards before and know what they are. That being said the strongest mind reading tricks I do don’t usually include the use of playing cards but then again, some very, very strong tricks do.

I think it’s important not to just thrust a pack of cards in peoples faces. I’ll usually warm them up with a few tests or effects without cards before they even see a pack of cards. I also could do a private show for about 2 hours without the use of one playing card and I have done this before.

At the end of the day it’s completely up to you as long as you respect your craft and make sure you don’t mix regular card tricks with your mentalism card tricks as this is sure to water them down and give the impression you are just a magician doing ‘card tricks’.

What’s The Difference Between Mind Reading VS Mentalism?

That’s a good question, to quote Wikipedia..

Mentalism – Mentalism is a performing art in which its practitioners, known as mentalists, use mental acuity, cold reading, hot reading, principles of stage magic, and/or suggestion to present the illusion of mind reading, psychokinesis, extra-sensory perception, precognition, clairvoyance or mind control. Hypnosis may also be used as a stage tool.

This definition is spot on – take note of the words ‘present the illusion of mind reading’. I haven’t given the definition of mind reading for a very good reason, as the ‘real’ definition pertains to a superhuman ability and in my opinion an ability that based on evidence, doesn’t exist. This on the other hand is another debate for a whole other day.

Mind Reading as you know it, performed on TV by magicians/mentalists/mind readers etc. is merely a form of Mentalism (see above) – simple magic tricks dressed up to represent real mind reading tricks. This may seem fairly obvious to most of you but believe me – many, many people believe people can actually read minds, which for us mentalists/mind readers, is great news.

I have previously written an article on the persona of the mentalist so I won’t go into detail here but being congruent is very important when performing mind reading tricks and some mentalists do it better than others. You need to choose between being psychic or being a body language/human behavioral expert. You cannot be both to your audience as they will assume there is general trickery (which of course there is) going on.

There’s a thin line between the mentalist and the magician. The main one being the presentation of the effect. A mentalist will usually have a false explanation behind the effect where as a magician will not usually give an explanation and say it was merely magic. Without a false explanation the audience will come to their own conclusion and usually it will be the actual method used e.g. sleight of hand.

In my opinion this is what makes a mentalism effect much stronger than a standard magic effect. It’s all in the presentation.

So back to my original point and to summarize.. mind reading tricks are merely mentalism tricks that have a false explanation of using mind control or telepathy using psychological tricks or psychic ability. Mind reading tricks come under the umbrella of mentalism tricks as a whole and they are virtually one in the same thing.
