Magic Secrets Revealed – Master Mentalism Review

Featured Article by Tony Weth

Introduction:

I just got this manual a while ago and was quite surprised with the content. Normally, internet magic e-books are filled with fluff and useless filler material that don’t reveal any valuable information. Master mentalism, however, contains tons of relevant, valuable magic secrets. I have been performing magic for quite a number of years now, and have learned many new magic effects from this guide.

Content:

Master mentalism is a pdf ebook with a total of 223 pages. The book is divided into six major sections:

1. mentalism, mind reading and Psychological Illusions (the “meat” of the book)

2. Interviews with Criss Angel and David Blaine

3. David Copperfield secrets

4. Levitation techniques

5. Card tricks

6. Hypnosis

Ryan Even does a fantastic job of thoroughly covering each of the sections, although the bulk of the book is in first chapter of mentalism. The magic tricks are of different skill levels; some of the tricks can be learned instantly while others will definitely take time perfect. The majority of the magic tricks involve more than one spectator. If you intend to perform for one particular person, you might not get as much out of this book. But if you’re the type who wants to impress and entertain groups at parties and other social events, then Master mentalism if definitely right for you.

My favorite mental effect was “Drunk on Water.” Ryan teaches you how to make a volunteer feel and act drunk after drinking plain water! There is absolutely no alcohol involved, just good old H20.

Section three is of Master mentalism shocking; it reveals David Copperfield’s most notable illusions. You can search all over the world for these secrets, but Chapter 3 of Master mentalism is the only place you’re going to find them. As I said before, I have been a magician for a long time, but the first place I learned how David Copperfield managed to make the Statue of Liberty disappear was in Master mentalism. I think this chapter on David Copperfield’s secrets alone is worth the price of the entire book.

Ryan mentions that a world renowned magic consultant, “Mr. X” to reveal the secrets. This might just be hype, or it might be true. Either way, the secrets are pretty darn good.

Pros:

1. Quality of the magic tricks

2. Easy to understand

3. Hypnosis section (very interesting material)

4. Copperfield secrets

5. Covers subtleties and psychological secrets

Cons:

1. More pictures could have helped

2. Could have included more card tricks

3. Expert magicians will know how some of the tricks are done

Overall:

Master mentalism is perfect for beginners who know little about magic. Amateurs and professional magicians will already know a few of the secrets, but will still find gems here and there. Even if you’re not into magic, and you’re just looking for a way to impress friends or meet girls, then Master mentalism will give you many powerful resources to improve your social life. If you must put a score on it, I’d give it a 9.5/ 10.

Magic and Illusions

“Presentation is very important when performing an art such as mentalism.” – Bradlee Carter

Featured Article by Andy Canning

Magic Tricks have fascinated people since early times. The Professional Magician has been with us since man learned to speak. If you can talk, you can make things seem other than they really are – and that is the essence of illusion.

Why the fascination? Why do we enjoy being fooled? We KNOW that the card didn’t really vanish into thin air – and yet … Have you ever witnessed unexplainable events or seen illusions so convincing that they leave you spellbound? Have you ever seen what happens to a group of people who experience magic up close? A high energy excitement develops that’s contagious. There’s amazement, laughter, a great buzz enjoyed by all those who witnessed the seemingly ‘unexplainable’.

We actually WANT there to be magic! We want to believe that someone can make things appear or disappear just by power of thought or by saying a magic word.

Nowadays we rarely see the ‘smoke and mirrors’ that the ancient magicians were reputed to use.

Illusions are much more sophisticated; they use few gadgets to work their deceit, most is effected by misdirection – making the audience look at one thing while something else is going on somewhere else.

The Magician or Illusionist makes a big flourish with one hand while the other secretly picks an object out of – or drops an object into – his pocket. Whenever a performer asks you to concentrate on something you may be sure that the trick is actually being done where you are not concentrating. The magician’s ‘patter’ is designed partly to entertain and partly to distract.

Magic as a hobby is very satisfying. You don’t have to be a David Blaine. You can delight and amaze people if you perform reasonably well, and this could soon lead to your hobby paying for itself and perhaps providing a part time or even full time income. Whilst a Stage Magician needs expensive props, the hobby or amateur Magician can perform tricks with his audience up close – even surrounding him or her, for some tricks – and often uses borrowed objects. These can be the most amazing tricks – very satisfying to perform – and will build the performer a magical reputation quickly.

How to Learn Magic and Become a Magician

“Body language not only gives you additional information about other people and about yourself, it also gives you different information” – Aldian Prakoso

Featured Article by Steven Smith

Is your dream to become a magician?

Magic is something that has always fascinated me as an art form and also as a profession. But how do you become a magician, where do you start? This is probably the most common question that spectators ask when they meet a professional magician.

Well this is my personal story as I do not think there is set way of becoming a magician.

For me, it all started with the amazement that magic generated in me whenever I watched magicians on TV or live shows. One of my older cousins also had an interest in magic and used to get catalogues from a magic dealer in France. The description of the effects that you could accomplish (after purchasing the props or technical book / video) was fascinating and the publicity even made it sound like it was pretty easy. I did not know anything about magic but that was how it all started for me. Back then, there was no such thing as internet – and there were only a handful of magic shops in France, charging a lot of money for the very special items they were selling on a real niche market.

I first ordered a few magic tricks that I thought were a bit disappointing. Then I got my first magic book, called “The Magic Book” by Harry Lorraine. The book had been translated into French which helped as my English was pretty basic at the time. I highly recommend this book if you can get hold of it as it contains a great variety of material and techniques. Basic coin magic and card magic is covered but also some mentalism (mind magic) effects and general magic with everyday objects. As soon as I got the book, I started practicing very seriously, dedicating most of my spare time to the study of magic.

I got my first pack of Bicycle Playing cards (made by the United States Playing Card Company or USPCC) and practiced most of the basic card techniques that are needed in order to perform the tricks that described in the magic literature.

Once you have mastered about half a dozen of important card techniques, you can then learn hundreds of card routines created over the years by our magic community. Of course, I must point out that you do not need hundreds of card routines in your repertoire. The same applies to coin magic.

Once you have learned the most important coin techniques, you can then learn the routines created by magicians. David Stone, David Roth, David Williamson are excellent coin magicians and I would highly recommend the material they have created.

The two most common formats for learning magic are books or dvd. So which format should you go for?

Learning magic with DVDs is slightly easier and faster than from a book, and you can get a better idea of the timing for the performance of the effects. One of problems with DVDs though, is what we call the “clone effect”, or magicians copying exactly their source of knowledge even using the same patter as the inventor.

Learning magic from a magic book on the other hand leaves more space for the imagination, and personalization of the effects.

I hope this will inspire you to start learning magic. It is great a hobby and can also become your profession if you are ready to spend the time practising.
