Street Magic Revealed

“Misdirection requires tons of practice and planning. It takes body coordination and fast sharp thinking. Magicians are proud of this art, as they should be given the amount of skill that it takes.” – Max Amilla

Street magicians have their secrets that they will not share with anyone. There is a sworn oath that exists among magicians to guard their secrets from the audience about how a trick is done.

Now because of advances in technology, especially the internet, there are ways to find street magic revealed and understand how even the most amazing illusions are performed. But even with the knowledge of how to perform such magic tricks and illusions, there is still some skill involved to make them work.

But even though some magic secrets may never be revealed, there are three secrets that most all magicians have shared.

The first is that a lot of tricks, especially street magic tricks, are performed through sleight of hand. This requires much skill in order to hide and object and make it reappear in another hand. A lot of new novice magicians still try to hide things up their sleeves. However, these are old tricks and rarely used, as most people expect long sleeves on magicians.

Slight of hand takes a ton of practice to become a master at.

Novice magicians use specially created ‘kits’ or gimmicks to try to create the illusions, but professionals use their impressive and skilled sleight of hand abilities. They must spend lots of time developing this, and it requires lots of patience and coordination to truly become a master.

So just because someone sees stage magic or street magic revealed, it does not mean that they will be able to go and perform the tricks easily.

Another magic secret that magicians use is known as the art of misdirection. The magician gets the audience, or spectators in the case of street magic tricks, to look at and focus on something, possibly by asking a question about it, and while they are looking at that he will do something else.

For example, he may say “do you see this yellow ball?” While the audience is looking at that yellow ball, he is carefully getting a red ball with his other hand.

This is an example of misdirection.

Another type of misdirection is a form where the audience does not see what is really going on. Some magicians when performing certain tricks, have a ton of assistants who also perform amazing acts on the stage. However, what you do not see or know is that those assistants are in on the trick and are helping the magician perform the trick just by being present.

Have you ever noticed that most magicians have beautiful ladies as their assistants? Hmm, can we say “misdirection?” Anyway…

In street magic, the magician is right in the ‘crowd’ so he does not have the advantages that a magician on stage has. This is why street magic performances can be even more impressive, because of the high level of interaction with never before met spectators instead of assistance who are in on the act.

This is also why getting street magic revealed to you can also be exciting, because you know that there is not the same ‘protection’ of the stage.

But this does not take anything away from the stage magician, and make no mistake, some street magic tricks require a ‘spectator’ as an assistant as well.

Another form of misdirection is using words in a certain way. For example, say that a magician tells you to look at an empty box. Now, we would look at the box as being empty, simply because he said it was empty. So when the magician pulls a rabbit out of this same box, our mind wonders how it happened.

Little did we know that the box had a compartment or divider that was simple removed, and the box was never actually empty at all.

Misdirection requires tons of practice and planning. It takes body coordination and fast sharp thinking. Magicians are proud of this art, as they should be given the amount of skill that it takes.

The third secret among many more is a magician’s patter or constant talking. This is what makes misdirection even more possible, because while the magician is asking you to look at his right hand, and talking causing you to focus and pay attention to his voice and right hand, then you will not notice what is going on with his left hand.

This is a strong tactic for making the illusion occur within the wink of an eye.

Patter is usually communicated in the form of a story, which is highly effective in all facets of life. Sometimes a story can be so interesting or funny, that we forget to pay attention to what the magician or assistant is doing,

Street magic utilizes some of these same secrets. So even though there are lots of resources and places where you can get the tactics of street magic revealed, you will still be caught and miss something.

This means that stage magic and street magic will always be enjoyed, because there will always be someone coming up with new and amazing illusions.

Magic is a performance art that intends to amaze and astonish people. The audience for an illusion can consist of a large number of people or just a few or even one. They can make use of a large stage with a certain distance or they can be done up close. Either way if the trick leaves the audience in wonder and amazement, then it has been a successful performance.

From beginner to professional, there are many types of magic tricks that magicians use to entertain their audiences. Some magicians try to specialize in one or two of the many styles in order to become a master at it. Some forms of magic can be learned very quickly while others may take years to fully learn and master. Here are a few of the many types of magic tricks that magicians use in their performances.

Stage Magic

One of the most widely used forms of magic is stage magic. Stage magic is usually performed for a medium sized or large audience. It generally makes use of many props and backstage areas. The magician has a large area to maneuver and store his props this aids in producing large, complex illusions.

Street Magic

This type of magic can be performed virtually anywhere. Unlike stage magic, street performances usually don’t have any props larger than something that could fit in the magician’s pocket. They frequently will even use objects from the audience as props. Street magic can be very appealing to spectators because the tricks are performed in close proximity to the crowd. But this can also make street magic trickier to master. A street magician will regularly have to perform with people watching from very close and from just about every angle. The magician has much less control of his environment than a stage magician.

Escape Magic

As you can probably guess, this form of magic deals with tricks that involve confinement or restraints. Sometimes referred to as escapology, the magician allows himself to be bound (usually with rope or chains) and/or confined to a small box that is locked from the outside. The trick consists of the magician being able to free himself without the use of tools in spite of the almost impossible situation he finds himself in. The more this trick compels the audience to feel claustrophobic, the better!

Mentalism

The form of magic in which the magician tries to manipulate the minds of the audience into believing that he possesses special abilities is called mentalism. The mentalist usually performs tricks that involve him predicting the future, reading minds or controlling the minds of the audience. Mentalism can be performed on stage with large audiences or close up with a small or solitary audience. David Blaine and Criss Angel are two of the more famous masters of mentalism.

Theatrical Seances

Magicians can employ spiritual or mediumistic types of tricks to perform theatrical s?ances. The magician will use this method to make the audience believe that they are speaking with or conjuring up ghosts. These performances are not really “spiritual” but are meant to look as though they are purely for entertainment purposes. Unfortunately some unscrupulous people have used these techniques to fool people and scam them out of their money.

Magic and Illusions

“The most intriguing part of the mentalist magic illusions is the opportunity your audience has to be right there in front of you.” – Tony Hodgison

Magic Tricks have fascinated people since early times. The Professional Magician has been with us since man learned to speak. If you can talk, you can make things seem other than they really are – and that is the essence of illusion.

Why the fascination? Why do we enjoy being fooled? We KNOW that the card didn’t really vanish into thin air – and yet … Have you ever witnessed unexplainable events or seen illusions so convincing that they leave you spellbound? Have you ever seen what happens to a group of people who experience magic up close? A high energy excitement develops that’s contagious. There’s amazement, laughter, a great buzz enjoyed by all those who witnessed the seemingly ‘unexplainable’.

We actually WANT there to be magic! We want to believe that someone can make things appear or disappear just by power of thought or by saying a magic word.

Nowadays we rarely see the ‘smoke and mirrors’ that the ancient magicians were reputed to use.

Illusions are much more sophisticated; they use few gadgets to work their deceit, most is effected by misdirection – making the audience look at one thing while something else is going on somewhere else.

The Magician or Illusionist makes a big flourish with one hand while the other secretly picks an object out of – or drops an object into – his pocket. Whenever a performer asks you to concentrate on something you may be sure that the trick is actually being done where you are not concentrating. The magician’s ‘patter’ is designed partly to entertain and partly to distract.

Magic as a hobby is very satisfying. You don’t have to be a David Blaine. You can delight and amaze people if you perform reasonably well, and this could soon lead to your hobby paying for itself and perhaps providing a part time or even full time income. Whilst a Stage Magician needs expensive props, the hobby or amateur Magician can perform tricks with his audience up close – even surrounding him or her, for some tricks – and often uses borrowed objects. These can be the most amazing tricks – very satisfying to perform – and will build the performer a magical reputation quickly.
